Custom decks and outdoor living for the East San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys
The eastern valley has some of the biggest backyards in the county, which makes it a good place for a proper outdoor living area: a deck off the house, a pergola, room to cook and eat outside. Many homes were built in the same era, so a lot of decks here are second decks replacing a tired original.
It is also among the hottest parts of LA County in summer, and the foothill neighborhoods from Glendora to Claremont and Diamond Bar sit close to open hillsides.

What decks face in the eastern valleys
Summer heat and dry wind. Wood dries out and checks faster in heat and Santa Ana winds, so wood decks need a regular sealing schedule. Composite needs less, but darker colors run hot in full sun.
Replacing an old deck. When the boards go, check the frame before laying new ones. Sound framing can sometimes be resurfaced; rotted joists or a failing ledger mean a rebuild. See our deck replacement page.
Foothill fire zones. If your home sits in a mapped Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, the California building code’s wildfire rules (Chapter 7A of the Building Code, Section R337 of the Residential Code) apply to the deck, including the walking surface. That usually means ignition-resistant or noncombustible decking, and a coating or stain does not count as protection. Check your address on CAL FIRE’s Fire Hazard Severity Zone map before you choose materials, and see the State Fire Marshal’s page on wildland building codes.
Deck permits in the East San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys
Cities across the eastern valley either run their own building departments or contract with LA County Public Works Building & Safety. Unincorporated areas such as Hacienda Heights and Rowland Heights use the county directly, with applications on EPIC-LA.
See our deck permit guide for when a deck needs a permit.

Decks in the East San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys: common questions
It depends on the frame. If the joists, beams and the connection to the house are sound, new boards can go on top. If there is rot or the ledger is failing, a full replacement is the safer choice.
Capped composite and PVC need the least upkeep in heat and sun; lighter colors stay cooler. Wood works too, but plan on sealing it regularly.
Only if the home is in a mapped Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, where the state wildfire building rules cover the deck surface. Check CAL FIRE’s map for your address.
Size, height and material drive most of it. Our deck cost guide explains the ranges.
