Custom decks and outdoor living for the South Bay
The South Bay is mostly mild, breezy and close to the water, which is exactly why people want to be outside. In the beach cities, lots are narrow and homes go up rather than out, so roof decks, second-story balconies and compact patio decks are the norm.
Inland in Torrance, Gardena, Hawthorne and Carson, yards are bigger and flatter, which suits ground-level and low-rise decks. On the Palos Verdes Peninsula it changes again: hillside lots, ocean views and decks built to make the most of them.

What decks face in the South Bay
Marine air. Fog, salt and constant breeze wear on wood finishes and rust ordinary hardware. Use stainless or hot-dip galvanized fasteners, and expect wood decks near the water to need sealing more often than inland ones.
Roof decks and balconies. A deck over living space has to keep water out of the house below. That means a proper waterproofing membrane and drainage, not just boards on joists. See our deck waterproofing page.
Peninsula slopes. Parts of the Palos Verdes Peninsula have known land movement, so footing design there starts with what the city and a soils report say about the site.
Deck permits in the South Bay
Every city here issues its own building permits or contracts with LA County Public Works Building & Safety, so start with your city’s building counter. Homes in unincorporated areas use EPIC-LA.
Beach-adjacent parcels can sit in the California coastal zone, where most new development also needs a coastal development permit. The Coastal Commission’s coastal zone fact sheet explains the basics.
For the countywide rules on when a deck needs a permit, see our deck permit guide.

Decks in the South Bay: common questions
Often, yes, but a roof deck is mostly about structure and waterproofing. The roof framing has to carry the load and the membrane underneath has to keep water out of the rooms below, so plan for engineering and a building permit.
Capped composite and PVC boards hold up well in marine air with little upkeep. Hardware matters as much as boards: stainless or hot-dip galvanized fasteners and connectors.
It can take longer. Hillside lots and areas with known land movement usually need more engineering and review, so talk to the city about your parcel before you finalize a design.
It depends mostly on size, height and material. Our deck cost guide explains the ranges and what moves the price.
A deck specialist versus the alternatives
Not every crew that will build you a deck is built to stand behind it. Here is the honest difference.

|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated deck and outdoor-living specialist | Yes | No | Occasional side job |
| Fixed written bid, no surprise charges | Yes | Verbal only | Often change-order heavy |
